Laura Nagy
Laura is a bilingual criminal defence lawyer based in Manitoba, originally from Montreal. Called to the Bar in 2018, she is committed to access to justice and proudly serves French-minority communities. Laura is also active in community work, including roles with Legal Aid, the Mental Health Review Board, and St. Boniface Street Links.
An experienced criminal defence lawyer
Laura was born and raised in Montreal in a family of first-generation immigrants. She earned her civil law degree from the University of Ottawa and later relocated to Winnipeg, where she completed her common law accreditation through the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
Laura’s interest in criminal law was confirmed during her time as a volunteer student at the Legal Help Centre in Winnipeg. She went on to gain valuable frontline experience as a legal assistant and then as a court clerk, before completing her articles at the boutique criminal defence firm Bueti Wasyliw Wiebe (as it then was). She was called to the Manitoba Bar in May 2018 and has since focused her practice primarily on criminal defence.
Fluent in both French and English, Laura is committed to serving Manitoba’s French-minority communities. She is a passionate advocate for French language rights and regularly provides legal services in French-minority communities including St. Boniface and St-Pierre-Jolys in addition to Winnipeg and the surrounding areas. Her commitment to accessibility and culturally sensitive representation is central to her practice. Her dedication to access to justice is reflected in her ongoing work with Legal Aid cases, and volunteer work with the Association des juristes d’expression française du Manitoba, Info Justice, the Legal Help Centre, and various other community organizations.
Laura has been a Panel Chair for the Manitoba Mental Health Review Board since 2021, where she contributes her legal expertise and understanding of mental health issues. She has also served as President of St. Boniface Street Links since 2018, a role she considers among the most rewarding aspects of her community engagement.
